п»їReal Madrid ease past Alaves on Karim Benzema brace, Eden Hazard strike.
Ale Moreno outlines how dependent Real Madrid have been on Karim Benzema's success this season. (1:29)
Karim Benzema scored twice and Eden Hazard picked up a rare goal as Real Madrid beat Alaves 4-1 in handy fashion in La Liga on Saturday.
Real Madrid, who were without manager Zinedine Zidane due to COVID, took the lead early in the first half when Casemiro headed home in the 15th minute from a corner kick.
Benzema and Hazard, who scored for just the second time all season, added a pair of well-taken goals shortly before half-time as Madrid took a 3-0 lead into the break.
Alaves pulled one back shortly before the hour mark when Joselu beat Thibaut Courtois from a Lucas Perez cross following a set piece to trim Real's lead to two goals.
Benzema put any hopes of a comeback for the hosts away soon after the Joselu goal, cutting in from the left on a counter-attack and burying a right-footed shot that Alaves' Fernando Pacheco had no chance to save.
The result puts Real Madrid on 40 points in La Liga after 19 games, four behind leaders Atleti, who have two games in hand over their chasing city rivals.
"This was a great performance from us and will lift our confidence," said Benzema after his side earned only their second victory from their last six games in all competitions including a shock loss in the Copa del Rey in midweek.
"We know every game is difficult, we always try to put in our best performance but sometimes it's hard when teams defend deep. But today the goals kept flowing and that's good for everyone, especially after the week we've had."

Barcelona vs Real Madrid prediction, preview, team news and more | La Liga 2020-21.
The 2020-21 edition of La Liga returns this weekend with one of the most intense rivalries in world football as Barcelona host Real Madrid at the Camp Nou in a high-octane fixture that could potentially determine the early favourites in the title race. Both Spanish giants have endured their fair share of troubles in La Liga this season and need a victory on Saturday.
Barcelona slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Getafe last week but staged a recovery in the UEFA Champions League with an excellent 5-1 victory against Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros. The Catalans have revamped their squad under Ronald Koeman and will want to prove a point in this game.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, have suffered consecutive defeats over the past week and are in desperate need of a boost of morale. Zinedine Zidane expressed confidence in his side following their shock loss to Shakhtar Donetsk and will have to ensure that his stars are at their best against Barcelona.
Barcelona and Real Madrid both drop three points.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Head-to-Head.
Barcelona's rivalry with Real Madrid often transcends the realm of sport but as far as the footballing head-to-head record is concerned, the two Spanish giants are on an even footing. Real Madrid and Barcelona have recorded 96 victories apiece from a total of 244 games and will want to edge ahead in this fixture.
The previous La Liga meeting between these two sides ended in a 2-0 victory for Real Madrid, with Vinicius Junior and Mariano Diaz getting on to the scoresheet. Both sides have undergone phases of transition since the game, however, and will look to make a fresh start in El Clasico this weekend.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Team News.
Barcelona.
Neto is set for an extended stay in Barcelona's goal with Marc-Andre ter Stegen unavailable for the Catalans. Samuel Umtiti is also injured and will not feature in the squad this week.
Antoine Griezmann was rested against Ferencvaros and is likely to play a part in the game. The Frenchman has endured a difficult few months at Barcelona and will have to take it up a notch in this game.
Injured: Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Samuel Umtiti, Jordi Alba, Matheus Fernandes.
Doubtful: None.
Suspended: None.
Real Madrid.
Real Madrid have injury issues of their own with both Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola sidelined for this game. Ferland Mendy and Marcelo started in the full-back positions against Shakhtar Donetsk and are likely to keep their places in the starting eleven.
While Sergio Ramos will return to the fold for this game, Eden Hazard and Martin Odegaard have been unable to recover in time and will not feature against Barcelona at the Camp Nou. Karim Benzema was used as a substitute in the Champions League this week and is sure to lead the line for Real Madrid in this game.
Injured: Eden Hazard, Martin Odegaard, Dani Carvajal, Alvaro Odriozola.
Doubtful: Mariano Diaz.
Suspended: None.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Predicted XI.
Barcelona Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Neto; Sergino Dest, Clement Lenglet, Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto; Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets; Ansu Fati, Philippe Coutinho, Antoine Griezmann; Lionel Messi.
Real Madrid Predicted XI (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Ferland Mendy; Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric; Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Prediction.
Real Madrid have been dismal by their standards in the last two games and Barcelona will look to drive home their momentary boost in form at the Camp Nou. The dimensions of the stadium will suit the Catalans and the likes of Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, and Ansu Fati will have to seize the initiative this Saturday.
Real Madrid have several issues to resolve in their line-up and will need to be defensively robust against a Barcelona side that is starting to find its feet. Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior can singlehandedly win games on their day and will have to pull a few rabbits out of their hats in this game.
While Real Madrid are perfectly equipped to take something away from this game, Barcelona are the in-form side at the moment and are well-placed to pip their arch-rivals to a victory.
Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Real Madrid.

Barcelona vs. Real Madrid score: El Clasico ends in scoreless draw for first time in 17 years.
Neither team could go three points clear atop the table.
Real Madrid and Barcelona played out a scoreless draw on Wednesday in El Clasico as it ended 0-0 for the first time since 2002. The rivals in La Liga both entered the day tied with 35 points but neither could go up three points in the table. Both teams saw golden chances cleared off the line. Only six shots went on goal in the entire game, with Real having four. Los Blancos out-shot the hosts 17-9 in the match that was postponed from October due to the violent protests in the Catalan region.
By both earning one point, the teams remain tied atop La Liga on points with Barca holding an advantage on goal differential.
Here are three takeaways from the game.
Pique, Ramos come up clutch.
Barca's Gerard Pique cleared a Karim Benzema header off the line early on, and Real's Sergio Ramos did the same on a Lionel Messi shot to keep the game at 0-0. Neither team created many good chances in what was a physical game featuring eight cards in total and numerous crunching tackles. There were chances to be had on the counter but the defenses performed well.
Real Madrid had a couple of penalty claims that were not rewarded. Los Blancos also appeared to have scored with less than 15 minutes to go as Gareth Bale put away a cross, but would-be assist man Ferland Mendy was just offside, and VAR later confirmed the call.
Here are highlights from the match:
History made by Ansu Fati, Ramos and Zidane.
A couple players made history in this match, including 17-year-old Ansu Fati of Barcelona. The Spanish U-21 talent is the youngest player to play in El Clasico for Barcelona since Vicenc Martinez way back in 1941. Ramos also made history in a sense, extending his record of most cards in El Clasico. He entered the day with 24 and is now on 25 after his yellow, putting him five ahead of Fernado Hierro.
But the most impressive feat may be what Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane accomplished. He's the first coach in Real Madrid's history to not lose any of his first five El Clasicos at the Camp Nou. Zidane has won two and drawn three.
When's the next meeting?
The second meeting is in La Liga is scheduled for the weekend of March 1, but you actually may not have to wait that long. In January, the Spanish Super Cup will be played. Usually that event pits the champion of La Liga against the Copa del Rey winner, which would have seen Barcelona take on Valencia. But as a way to increase interest overseas and surely with big financial implications, there are four teams involved now and it's taking place in Saudi Arabia.
Real and Valencia play on Jan. 8, and Barca takes on Atletico Madrid on Jan. 9. The winners face off on Jan. 12, and it could be the second El Clasico of the season if Real and Barca both advance.
